This is a cover of the Bob Dylan song often played live by The Sisters of Mercy in the early days including their famous last pre-split gig at the Royal Albert Hall. A different live version from 1985 was released in 1990 on the Doctor Jeep single).

Apart from that, various bootlegs derive their title from the song, for example Knocking On Heavens Door, Knocking On Heaven's Door or Knockin' On Docks' Door. Of course, the track is featured on many, many other bootlegs as well.

Lyrics

Mama take this badge off of me
I can't use it anymore
It's getting dark, too dark to see
Feel I'm knockin' on Heaven's door

Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door

Mama wipe this blood from my face
I'm sick and tired of all this war
There's a long hard feelin' and it's hard to chase
Feel I'm knockin' on Heaven's door

Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door

Mama put these guns to the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
There's a long black train and it's comin' round
Feels like knockin' on Heaven's door

Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
Knock knock knockin' on Heaven's door
