Anaconda 7" Single Cover (front)
Some Girls Wander By Mistake - CD Cover (front)

Anaconda was first released on the single of the same name and can also be found on the early-singles compilation Some Girls Wander By Mistake.

On 17 April 1983, shortly after the single-release, the song was broadcast by John Peel on BFBS (Germany), funny enough apparently the only time he played it on air. A recording of this and other John Peel broadcasts of Sisters songs over the years is in circulation among the fanbase. Check also the lovely fan-compiled John Peel Wiki and the I Was A Teenage Sisters of Mercy Fan blog under Sisters Mysteries V – did Peel play Damage Done? for some further interesting and entertaining information.

Anaconda is one of the best-known Sisters songs and has always been part of the band's live-setlist. An overview of these live-performances up until 2003 is available at the remarkable Sisters of Mercy Database v0.5 Beta. Audience recordings of these live performances do of course exist and are in circulation among the fanbase.

Likewise, there are various bootlegs featuring live and demo versions of the song, some of which are pictured here. And a flexi of the track does exist as well.

Lyrics

Baby buy an Anaconda, Baby buy a thing to wear
She go walking, she go crawling, she go sliding through the air
She go talking warm and fashion, she go talking debonair but
See her face turn to a mask and passion turn to she don't care

She will, she will, she will, she will ... let it take her breath away
She will, she will, she will, she will ... let it take her life away

Let it wrap itself around her
Till it kill her in it's way

She will, she will, she will, she will ... blow away

Baby hit the rush hour traffic, get a ride to anywhere
Baby buy the number three, she pay the man, she pay the fare
Baby hit the wild blue yonder, on the mainline, on the slide
Steal to feed the Anaconda, will not see the suicide

She will, she will, she will, she will ... let it take her breath away
She will, she will, she will, she will ... let it take her life away

Let it wrap itself around her
Till it kill her in it's way

She will, she will, she will, she will ... blow away

Baby finger on the trigger, Baby shoot formaldehyde
Turn into a marble figure, turn the matter dead inside
Turn into a China doll, go maybe to the final ride
Baby go where I don't follow Baby to the other side

She will, she will, she will, she will ... make it take her breath away
She will, she will, she will, she will ... make it take her life away

Make it wrap itself around her
Till it kill her in it's way

She will, she will, she will, she will ... blow away
