The song Kiss The Carpet was first released as the opening track of the Reptile House EP, where it was called just Kiss.
The LP ends with Kiss The Carpet (Reprise) which is not listed on the cover.
Soon after the release of The Reptile House EP in May 1983, BBC Radio One presenter John Peel, a connoisseur of the band at the time,
played various tracks from the EP during his shows. Kiss The Carpet was broadcast on three occasions:
- 14 June 1983 - John Peel Show, Radio One
- 19 June 1983 - John Peel's Music, BFBS
- 20 August 1983 - John Peel's Music, BFBS
For more information about these and other airings of Sisters songs by John Peel we recommend the wonderful John Peel Wiki and the Sisters Mysteries V – Did Peel play Damage Done? entry in the lovely I Was A Teenage Sisters of Mercy Fan blog. A collection of audios from all available John Peel presentations of Sisters songs compiled by Dan Ishikawa and published by
Phil Verne is in circulation among the fanbase, see also John Peel Shows 1980-85 for some lovely coverart by reverend.
Kiss The Carpet was reissued officially in 1992 on the 2LP compliation of early singles Some Girls Wander By Mistake.
More or less naturally, a flexi bootleg featuring the song does exist as well.
Between 1982 and 2001, The Sisters of Mercy performed the song live on more than 40 occasions. After 2001 it would not appear again until its return for the 30th Stage Anniversary Tour in 2011/2. Since then, Kiss The Carpet has been a regular part of The Sisters' setlist again and was most recently performed @Ancienne Belgique in March 2016.
The lyrics below are taken from The Sisters of Mercy official lyrics book Postcards From Above The Chemist
Lyrics
She got red eyes
She wear dust
I went over over over over
I went bust
I kissed I kissed the carpet
I climbed the curtain
I was sure
I was certain
And I said
Yeah
She got red eyes
She wear dust
I went over over over over
I went bust
I kissed I kissed the carpet
I climbed the curtain
I was sure
I was certain
But I said
Next time I look before I
Next time the carpet
Next time I look before I
Kiss the carpet should I
Kiss
Kiss
Kiss
