Body Electric, like Alice exists in two officially recorded versions:
- the 1982 version on the Body Electric single, which was also used for the 1992 compilation album Some Girls Wander By Mistake
- the 1984 re-recorded version for the Body And Soul 12" single
Beyond that, there is an early demo from 1981 with slightly different lyrics and - thanks to endemoniada75 - available for a listen here.
Another fully instrumental demo can be found in the same channel here.
As the wonderful fanbase of John Peel have found in their John Peel Wiki, the 7" version of Body Electric was broadcast on BBC Radio One
during the John Peel Show of 16 January 1984. On this issue, we recommend you also check the lovely - Teenage Sisters of Mercy Fan blog
under Sisters Mysteries V – did Peel play Damage Done? for more details and some interesting read, or this thread @The Heartland Forums
and in addition look under John Peel Shows 1980-85.
Body Electric has always been one of the best loved songs of The Sisters of Mercy and has been part of their live sets ever since the release in 1982
as can be seen in the videos of live performances down below, which give some impressions from over the years.
Lyrics
Through the cables and the underground now
The faceless breathless calls
This is Babel, sensurround now
This place is death with walls (repeat x4)
Too much contact, no more feeling
The Sound around them all
Acid on the floor so she walk on the ceiling
And the body electric flashes on the bathroom wall (repeat x2)
Crawling to the corners where the idiot children call
See the body flashing on the bathroom wall
(repeat all)
Music & Lyrics: Andrew Eldritch
