1969: The Stooges - The Stooges
1983: The Sisters of Mercy - Alice EP
1990: Speed Kings 1990
1992: Some Girls Wander By Mistake

1969 was originally written by The Stooges, also known as Iggy And The Stooges, and first released in 1969 on their debut album of the same name.

The song is one of the first covers played by The Sisters of Mercy and was already performed at the very first known Sisters' gig at Alcuin College, York in 1981.
It was also braodcast on air during the first BBC Radio One Session of The Sisters with John Peel in August 1982.

1969 was officially released by The Sisters of Mercy in March 1983 on the Alice 12" EP. Before that, Andrew Eldritch had recorded a demo version at home in his flat,
which forms one part of the so-called Basement Demos 1982. The song does also appear on The Sisters' "baby foto collection" of 1992 Some Girls Wander By Mistake.

For 10 years, 1969 remained a regular part of The Sisters' live set and was time and again also used within medley like during The Sisters' gig at Reading Festival 199, where it appeared as the final encore in a combination with He's Got The Whole World In His Hands and Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. 1969 saw its so far last performance on August 29th, 1992 at the Pukkelpop Festival, Belgium.

Apart from that, the Speed Kings as well covered the track during their 1990s shows...

All these demos and live versions can (of course) be found plenty bootlegs like

GOOD THINGS Plus 2 live songs 7", Kenny Giles Walks On Water CD, Carmina Burana 12" LP, Halloween In Arkham 12" LP, Rough Diamonds 2LP,
The Neon Dream CD, Brothers & Sisters CD, Electric Live (Pukkelpop 1992) and many, many more ...

Lyrics

Well allright!!!

It's 1969 ok
We got a war across the USA
There's nothing here for me and you
We're just sitting here with nothing to do

There's nothing here for me and you
Another year with nothing to do
Now last year I was 21
I didn't have a lot of fun
Now I'm gonna be 22
So, oh my, I'll boohoo
Now I'm gonna be 22
So, oh my, I'll boohoo

It's 1969 ok
We got a war across the USA
There's nothing here for me and you
We're just sitting here with nothing to do

Well it's 1969, baby
Well it's 1969, baby
It's 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9-teen 69
Teen 69 (3x)

Yow!!! (3x)
